Washington, Brasilia, Bogota… Calls for new elections in Venezuela are increasing on Thursday, August 15, as the country has been in the grip of a political crisis since the disputed presidential election of July 28. The Venezuelan opposition, which claims victory for its candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, sees these foreign positions as “a lack of respect” towards Venezuelans. “Popular sovereignty must be respected”opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said at a news conference.

So, to the question “Are you in favor of new elections in Venezuela? ?”US President Joe Biden responded “i am”without elaborating further, during a brief exchange with the press at the White House.

Earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro called in a message posted on X to the outfit “new free elections” in Venezuela, also suggesting among a list of proposals the “lifting of all economic sanctions” which are hitting the country. “A political solution for Venezuela that brings peace and prosperity to its people depends on Nicolas Maduro”added the Colombian president.

His Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also suggested to Nicolas Maduro that “convene” new elections. If Nicolas Maduro “has common sense, he could try to appeal to the people of Venezuela, perhaps even call and schedule elections”Lula said in an interview on a local Brazilian radio station.
