Selective listening | Emma Beko presents Digital Damage

Emma Beko has experience as a rapper and singer, having first launched into the Heartstreets duo years ago. However, after the release of his first solo album Blue, in 2021, the pressure to create a sequel she would be proud of has dampened her inspiration. Time has done its job and Beko presents these days the mini album Digital Damagethe first part of a dual concept.

“I had to give myself time. The time to live, the time to breathe and to do some introspection to be able to write. Emma Beko recounts having had a period of questioning after her first album. ” The song MHS really worked and I thought I would never be able to do something so good or catchy, she says. Blue was done without any pressure, it was so free. There, I was thinking about how it was going to be received. Thinking too much about expectations, for me, it doesn’t work. »

The blank page, then. Or at least material she wasn’t really happy with. Emma Beko seems to have found this period long, too long. However, only six months passed after the release of the first album before, finally, “it unlocks”. “In September, I realized that I hadn’t lost it,” says the rapper. I saw Digital Damage very clearly. »

This vision for his next work came in the form of a mood and themes that would revolve around the harmful side of digital life.

With COVID-19, I spent a lot of time on my computer and my phone. It’s boring to say that social media is bad, but I saw how it affected people around me. I find it harmful.

While many people have experienced extreme loneliness in recent years, Emma Beko also reflected on how often she felt alone in her life. “I felt that feeling in people, but also the fact that we got used to it and that we adapted,” she explains.

Many facets

For the instrumental part, his childhood listening to grunge music had a direct effect on the creation of Digital Damage. “It was the nineties, I had older half-brothers and we listened to clips on TV on MuchMusic and MTV. My favorite compilation was Big Shiny Tunes. So, want it or not, even my way of writing melodies comes from a lot of that. »

Beko says that she didn’t really realize until now how much she had been influenced by this grunge music.

I’ve always said I’m hip-hop, but I’m so much more complex than that!

Emma Beko

She quotes the group The Stones, “which does both the most hardcore and the soft, feverish and fragile”. It’s a duality that interests him and that we find on Digital Damage.

And speaking of duality, Emma Beko also wanted to create a sort of encounter between the two opposites that are Digital Damage and the mini-album that will follow, the title of which we do not yet know. “They are two parts of a universe,” she explains. Also, to be honest, I find it cool to give each song a chance to live longer, to give longevity to my project. »

For this second release, “a more intense EP”, she collaborated with the same team, namely her long-time musical partner Beau Geste, CFCF, Da-P and Day Hills. Added to the team are Montrealers Backxwash and Cécile Believe.

Following Digital Damage should be out in the early fall. Emma Beko will present her new mini-album during an intimate launch in a private loft.

Harry Styles

Harry Styles is back with the first extract from his album to be released on May 20. The room As It Was came out on 1er April and the burlesque music video of less than three minutes has already accumulated 52 million views in just ten days. Its melody is catchy, the kind that sticks in your head for hours. While the Briton’s third album is due out in just over a month, a tour should be announced shortly. Perhaps Montrealers will finally have the opportunity to enjoy a concert by the most popular singer of the hour after the cancellation of his visit to the Bell Center last fall.

Pelch

A newcomer to the Quebec music scene, singer-songwriter Pelch has the potential to win over many fans of popular music. The one who released his first mini-album on April 8, looking around, is only 22 years old, but has already come a long way. Fans of Dermot Kennedy or Lewis Capaldi will be delighted by the folk pop melodies, the bewitching lyrics and the scratchy but powerful voice of the Quebecer. Pelch will be on the boards of the Ministry on April 13 for the launch of his mini-album, then will tour a few halls and festivals in Quebec in the summer.

April Jensen

She’s only 19, but Avril Jensen already has her own artistic identity. In colors, the first EP full of freshness that she co-produced with nimbustowokay (Alexandre Boivin), the daughter of the singer-songwriter of Argentine origin Tomás Jensen (the album was recorded in his studio in the canton de Hatley) wanders from bossa nova to electro-pop on acoustic guitar, distills a melancholy of astonishing maturity and manages to assert itself in just five songs. An artist full of promise that we will certainly follow closely.

Loud

Very discreet since the start of the pandemic, Loud recently launched a new song, Nothing less, with White-B, from group 5Sang14. A very heavy piece, whose clip was shot at night under lampposts, in which the two rappers exchange the microphone. All of this hints at a return from Loud, who hasn’t released an album since. All that for this in 2019, and which had accumulated millions of plays. He will also be performing on the stages of several festivals in the coming months, including Metro Metro in May in Montreal and the Festival d’été de Québec in July.

Gasoline

The artists being banned for many months in the performance halls of Quebec because of sanitary measures, it is on the planet Tatooine that the rock group Gazoline chose to go and play, offering a concert in the mythical Cantina of Mos Eisley, ultimate haunt of intergalactic gangsters. All this is nothing like an April Fool’s joke, the group has indeed recreated from scratch the famous bar seen in the first Star Wars film, in 1977. Premiered on Monday at the Escogriffe bar, the 20-minute concert film directed by Ariel Poupart can be watched on Facebook since Tuesday evening.
