Security situation in Northern Ireland | No deaths in 2023, a first since 1969

(Belfast) No deaths linked to the security situation in Northern Ireland were recorded last year, a first since 1969 and the beginning of this type of statistics in the British province marked by three decades of bloody conflict.

More than 3,500 people died during the “Troubles”, which pitted loyalists, mainly Protestants, and republicans, mainly Catholics, against each other.

“This is the first calendar year since statistics began in 1969 where no deaths linked to the security situation have been recorded,” indicates the annual bulletin of the Northern Irish police published on Friday.

One death from this cause was recorded in 2022, she specifies.

Despite the peace agreements signed in 1998, violent actions have not completely disappeared in Northern Ireland.

Last year, Northern Irish police recorded eight bomb attacks, compared to five in 2022, and 33 shootings, compared to 29 in 2022.

The police also recorded 31 injuries in 2023 following paramilitary-type attacks, compared to 25 the previous year.
