Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reappointed as head of the Atlantic Alliance until October 2024

Appointed on October 1, 2014 for a first term of four years, the Norwegian served two full terms and had already been extended for one year in 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

One more year at the head of the Atlantic Alliance. The Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO since 2014, announced on Tuesday July 4 that he had been reappointed to his post for a year. “I am honored by the decision of NATO allies to extend my mandate as Secretary General until October 1, 2024”he said on Twitter. “Transatlantic ties between Europe and North America have guaranteed our freedom and security for almost 75 years, and in a more dangerous world, our Alliance is more important than ever.”

This extension had been expected for several weeks, in the absence of consensus on the name of a possible successor. It was endorsed at a meeting of ambassadors from the 31 member countries at the organisation’s headquarters in Brussels.

The highly anticipated Vilnius summit

The question of Ukraine joining NATO will be at the heart of the Atlantic Alliance summit in Vilnius (Lithuania) on 11 and 12 July. Membership is excluded as long as the Russian offensive continues, but kyiv wants assurances for the future.

“We need a very clear and intelligible signal at the Vilnius summit that Ukraine can become a full member of NATO after the war”recently hammered the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky.
