A simplification expected by many families. School grants for middle and high school students will be awarded to eligible households without the need to take any steps from the start of the 2024 school year, the government announced on Tuesday May 9.
“For the start of the 2024 school year [et non la prochaine rentrée soclaire, en septembre 2023]after registering for college and high school, families will have no further steps to take or supporting documents to submit for obtaining and renewing scholarships throughout their education., writes Matignon in his press kit published at the end of the seventh Interministerial Committee for Public Transformation (CITP) chaired by the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne. For his part, the Minister of Education, Pap Ndiaye, welcomed in a tweet a “social measure which (him) is particularly close to heart”.
Parents’ civil status information cross-referenced with their tax return
At the time of registration for college or high school, the establishments will collect information on the civil status of the parents or legal guardians of the students: surname, first name, date and place of birth. According to the Ministry of National Education, this information will be cross-referenced with that of the Ministry of Public Accounts, which has knowledge of the parents’ income, in particular via their tax declaration. The device will not be compulsory, families will still be able to apply for a grant in parallel.
These scholarships range from 110 to 1,000 euros depending on the student’s class, the parents’ income and the number of children per household. For the current school year, 739,181 middle school students and 531,594 high school students in public education benefit from scholarships.
