Back to school is fast approaching for students in the greater Montreal area. Here is an overview of the important dates to mark in your calendars for the 2024-2025 school year, including school holidays and vacations.
The return to class for primary and secondary school students will be staggered between August 27 and 30 in school service centers (CSS) in the metropolitan area. Here are the dates to remember according to the establishments:
Back to school at CEGEP
On the CEGEP side, classes have already resumed in most establishments. Only Cégep de Rosemont, Cégep du Vieux-Montréal and Cégep André-Laurendeau are waiting until August 26 to reopen their doors.
School holidays not to be missed
Students (and teachers) are entitled to the usual public holidays during the school year. These are:
- Labor Day: Monday, September 2
- Thanksgiving: Monday, October 14
- Easter: Friday 18 and Monday 21 April
- Patriots’ Day: Monday May 19
Educational days to plan
The school calendar also includes several pedagogical days throughout the year. The dates may vary from one establishment to another. Check the website of your child’s school or CEGEP regularly to find out the exact dates of the pedagogical days. As soon as you have the dates, include them in your family calendar to plan ahead.
Plan for childcare options
- School daycare services : they remain open during school holidays. Many plan outings outside of school on this occasion. Depending on the activity chosen, additional fees may be required. If your child is not registered or is not interested in the outing, other options will have to be considered.
- Family alternatives : call on grandparents, uncles or aunts, or organize rotations with other parents.
- Special activities: Some community or cultural organizations offer activities during these days. Check out their websites to keep your children busy in a fun and enriching way.
- Shared leave: plan to telework from home or take time off. In families where both parents work, consider splitting these days to ensure an equal sharing of family and work responsibilities.
The Holidays
As for the Christmas holidays, the end of classes is scheduled for December 20 in the CSS of the metropolitan region. Students will be entitled to a two-week break. A well-deserved rest to celebrate with family, have fun and enjoy the first days of winter.
Back to school in January
In primary and secondary schools, classes resume either on January 6 or 7, depending on the establishment. Check your school’s school calendar for the exact date.
CEGEP students, for their part, are entitled to a longer leave since classes do not resume until the week of January 20, 2025.
The (much-anticipated) spring break
Students in the greater metropolitan area will be on vacation on the same dates, from March 3 to 7, 2025. An expected break to recharge their batteries before diving into the last part of the school year.
