Islanders edge Red Wings 4-1

Anders Lee scored two of the team’s four third period goals on Saturday as the New York Islanders defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1.

The Islanders have improved to 5-2-1 in their last eight outings and remain in position to claim one of two spots reserved for clubs drafted into the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Zach Parisé and Noah Dobson also found the back of the net for the Islanders. Goaltender Ilya Sorokin blocked 22 pucks.

Dylan Larkin, on a power play late in the second period, scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, who suffered a fifth straight loss.

Goalkeeper Magnus Hellberg completed his day with 31 saves.

The Islanders took the lead for good when Parisé and Lee hit the target early in the third period.

Parisé scored his 16th goal of the season 2:11 from the start, then Lee made it 2-1 at 4:39.

Dobson added to the Islanders lead with a powerful slap shot at 15:41 and Lee completed his double at 17:21.

Jack Quinn scored on a three-goal second-period drive as the Buffalo Sabers defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 on Saturday.

Tage Thompson, Jeff Skinner, Tyson Jost and Vinnie Hinostroza also scored for the Sabers (32-25-4), who matched their win total from last season. Eric Comrie stopped 33 shots.

Alex Killorn scored twice and Brayden Point also moved the ropes for the Lightning, who suffered a fourth loss in a row (0-3-1). Brian Elliott stopped 29 shots.

With the Lightning trailing 4-1 after two periods, head coach Jon Cooper decided to send a message to his team. He benched Point, captain Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov for all of the third period.

“As a coach you have to put your team in the best position to win and 99.9% of the time those guys are going to give us the best to win,” Cooper said. Today, I think they weren’t giving us the best chance of winning. »

Lightning forward Pat Maroon said he’s confident the three star forwards will redeem themselves.

“They’re angry, but they got the message,” Maroon said. They are leaders who have been benched, but they have the same status as everyone else. They know it and they will bounce back in the next game. »

The victory slipped quickly through the Lightning’s fingers after Point opened the scoring on the power play with 6:32 left in the first period.

About two and a half minutes later, Thompson tied the game by scoring a 20e goal in the first period this season, an NHL high.

The Sabers took control thanks to the successes of Hinostroza, Jost and Quinn in the second period. Then, Skinner made it 5-1 by scoring on the power play after 53 seconds of play in the final period.

The Sabers capitalized on their speed, consistently beating the Lightning for loose pucks. They also ignored the physical play of their rivals.

Tyler Bertuzzi set up a goal on his debut in his new uniform, Linus Ullmark made 24 saves and the Boston Bruins beat the New York Rangers 4-2 on Saturday.

Charlie Coyle scored on Bertuzzi’s play and also added an assist on a shorthanded Tomas Nosek goal for the Bruins, who won a 10e straight game. The Bruins improved their home record to 26-2-3.

David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron also hit the target in the third period. For Pastrnak it was a 44e goal this season and for Bergeron, from a 23e.

Alexis Lafrenière scored both goals for Rangers, who have lost six of their last eight games. Igor Shesterkin stopped 20 shots.

Acquired Tuesday from the Chicago Blackhawks, Patrick Kane still hasn’t scored a point in two outings with the Rangers.

Brad Marchand was in uniform after leaving Thursday’s Bruins game early with a lower-body injury.

Bertuzzi moved from the Detroit Red Wings to the Bruins on Thursday. He collected a loose puck behind the net and joined Coyle, who beat Shesterkin with a one-timer. Coyle thus opened the scoring at 18:07 of the first period.

Stars players celebrate.

Mason Marchment and Joe Pavelski ended the worst droughts of their careers and the Dallas Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 7-3 on Saturday.

Jason Robertson provided two goals, including one in an empty net, while Miro Heiskanen, Radek Faksa and Wyatt Johnston also scored for the Stars. Jake Oettinger made 32 saves.

The Stars have won four of their last five games (4-0-1).

On the side of the Avalanche, Samuel Girard collected a goal and two assists, while Andrew Cogliano and Evan Rodrigues also moved the ropes. The Avalanche allowed seven goals in a second straight game, two losses.

Alexandar Georgiev was kicked out of his net midway through the second period after giving up five times on 19 shots. Keith Kinkaid, recently acquired from the Boston Bruins, took over and stopped eight shots.

Marchment hadn’t scored in their last 32 games. In addition, his last goal, scored on December 13, was scored in an empty net. He hadn’t beaten a goaltender in his last 37 games, but he finally beat Georgiev’s vigilance at 5:25 of the second period, giving the Stars a 4-1 cushion.

For his part, Pavelski ended an 18-game desert crossing by hitting the target at 17:42 of the first period.
