Due to the decline in the purchasing power of the French, sales are fewer than usual during the sales period, at the beginning of July.

Full shelves ten days before the end of the sales. With five items already purchased, one customer was an exception on Saturday July 9. “Last week, I went out to do the sales and I spent a lot”, she explains. This year, compulsive purchases are much rarer. The majority of customers now leave with fewer clothes than before. “Now you buy things you need. You don’t walk around like that to buy anything”says another client.

Over the first eleven days of sales, in-store purchases fell by 19% compared to the same period in 2019. The main reason for this change is the decline in purchasing power. “I spend moderately because I tell myself that back to school can be tricky”, says a customer in a shoe store. Internet sales are also down from last year.
