Saint-Michel | A 37-unit building for people suffering from mental health problems

A building of 37 housing units has just been inaugurated, in the Saint-Michel district, to house low-income people suffering from mental health problems, who will also receive support there.


It was the Maison St-Dominique organization that piloted the Maison Shelley project, built at a cost of 18 million, with help from Ottawa (7 million), Quebec (2.4 million) and Montreal. (3 million).

For the moment, 16 tenants have settled in the new building and the others will arrive by the end of March, indicated the general director of Maison Saint-Dominique, Marie-Maud Sylvestre Audette, Friday at a press conference.

“As we are in a housing crisis, there are a lot of requests made by different teams and by the community,” she stressed.

This is the sixth project of its kind that Maison Saint-Dominique has created in Montreal, to meet the needs of this vulnerable clientele.

“In times of crisis, it is often the most vulnerable people who are hit hardest,” noted federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, who represented his government at the inauguration of the new building. “People who suffer from mental health problems often experience additional difficulties in finding housing. »
