Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu | Thousands of residents deprived of water

Several thousand residents of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu were deprived of water on Tuesday after a major water main break in the municipality.

According to the local newspaper French Canadasome 20,000 homes in the Saint-Luc, L’Acadie, Saint-Jean and Île Sainte-Thérèse districts have no longer had running water since the start of the day.

The water main break would have occurred at the intersection of Saint-Jacques and Caldwell streets. The drinking water pipe in question, with a diameter of 75 centimeters, supplies the north of the city.

“Repairs to the pipe, which are complex, continue tonight and Wednesday. The time of return of the service remains undetermined,” indicated the municipality of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu on Tuesday on its Facebook page. “People who still have water on the West Shore: a boil water advisory is in effect. »

Bottled water distribution points have been set up by the City: they will reopen Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. at the Carrefour Richelieu (600 rue Pierre-Caisse) and at the terminus (800 rue Boucher). “On site, citizens can receive two four-liter containers of drinking water free of charge per address. Distribution is done via a drive-thru service at both locations,” indicates the City. “It is important to bring your own bottles or containers. Filling is done independently. »

“All measures are taken to preserve the health of citizens,” Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu said in a press release. “As soon as the situation is restored, a message lifting the boil water advisory will be communicated by the municipality. »
