According to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), the victim was in critical condition at the hospital.
No arrests were reported shortly before dawn.
According to the many people who alerted the 911 emergency telephone exchange, the shooting occurred around 5 a.m. on rue Notre-Dame Ouest, near the intersection of rue Rose-de-Lima, in the Saint -Henry.
It appears that the victim, a 32-year-old man, was kicking a car before someone on board opened fire at him. The car then left the scene.
The area is essentially residential, but there are several commercial establishments on this stretch of Notre-Dame Street, which suggests the presence of surveillance cameras that may have captured images of the shooting. The police did not know at daybreak whether the victim and his attacker knew each other.
The SPVM police officers who erected a security perimeter before carrying out a summary examination of the premises found projectile casings on the ground.
Notre-Dame Street West has been closed for an indefinite period between Bourget and Atwater streets so that investigators can comb through the area.
