Russia has reopened the gas tap to Europe. After ten days of maintenance on the Nord Stream gas pipeline, deliveries were to resume on Thursday, July 21, from 6 am. “He works”a spokesman for the company Nord Stream told AFP, about this pipeline which directly connects the Siberian gas fields to northern Germany, from where the gas is then exported to other European countries. .

Uncertainty remains, however, about the quantities that will be transported. Dn the context of the war in Ukraine and the showdown between Moscow and the West over energy, Europe had prepared itself for the energy company Gazprom, owner of the gas pipeline, to cut off the tap for good. Vladimir Putin thus hinted that the gas pipeline could only operate at 20% of its capacity.

To avoid a major crisis, the European Commission even proposed a plan on Wednesday to reduce gas demand by 15% in the short term, denouncing a new use of gas “like a weapon” by the Kremlin. Nord Stream transports around a third of the 153 billion m3 of gas purchased annually by the EU.
