A Canadian general and senior NATO and European officials say Russian attempts to spread “false narratives” to the West about the invasion of Ukraine are failing.
At a security conference in Ottawa, they said Tuesday that the Kremlin’s disinformation campaigns are being successfully foiled and countered in Europe and North America.
But they have warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is stoking dissent in Africa and the developing world, blaming food shortages on Western sanctions when they instead stem from the Russian invasion and blockade of Ukrainian ports.
Jay Janzen, director of communications for NATO Allied Command operations, argued that Russia has had catastrophic failures since the start of the invasion of Ukraine, including with its disinformation campaigns.
Major-General Michael Wright, commander of Canadian Forces Intelligence Command, said the UK, US and Canada have successfully countered Russian disinformation since the start of the war.
Charles Fries, European Union Deputy Secretary General for Common Security and Defense Policy, said the EU is waging a war of “narratives” and pushing back against Russian propaganda, including the Kremlin’s false claims that the Food shortages stem from the sanctions.
