Eight years after the death of Dominique Baudis, the town hall of Toulouse wanted to pay a new tribute to him, who directed the Capitol for almost eighteen years. A street now bears the name of the former mayor of Toulousefrom 1983 to 2001, died April 10, 2014, aged 66.
And it’s not just any street: the one that runs along the arcades, on the Place du Capitole. A very historic street in Toulouse, according to Jean-Michel Lattes, president of Tisséo Collectivités but also deputy to the metropolis delegate for the naming of the ways. This street is one of the oldest in the pink city, following the layout of the cardo maximusthe north-south axis of the city in Roman times.
A necessarily moving tribute for the family of the former mayor of Toulouse, including his son Pierre Baudis: “a lot of emotion but above all pride”testifies the candidate for the last legislative elections in the first constituency of Haute-Garonne. “It was Pierre and then Dominique Baudis who really changed this town to make it gentle and pleasant to live in”.
Dominique Baudis has held several electoral positions: deputy for Haute-Garonne, European deputy and president of the regional council of Midi-Pyrénées – but it is to the city of Toulouse that his memory remains linked. “Toulouse is Baudis, Baudis is Toulouse”, according to Jean-Luc Moudenc. The current mayor of Toulouse cut his teeth there, in politics, alongside Dominique Baudis: “Dominique was the 80th mayor of Toulouse but he is the most emblematic, he is the one who brought the most things to the city and therefore it is normal that the tribute is not ordinary, in such an emblematic place because that we all owe him that”.
A bust of Dominique Baudis had already paid homage to him since 2015, in the court of Henri IV. His signature has also been visible on the pediment of Blagnac airport since 2019. Three years later, a street bears his name, on the forecourt of the Capitol, where photos retracing his mandates are also on display.
