Rouyn-Noranda | Drowning of a 26-year-old man in Lake Opasatica

(Rouyn-Noranda) A man who had gone swimming drowned in Lac Opasatica in Rouyn-Noranda, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. He had been missing for several hours when he was located on Saturday afternoon by the emergency services.


Emergency services were notified around 3 a.m. Saturday morning that a person was missing in the Lac Opasatica area.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) indicated that a man had gone swimming in the lake and had not been seen again by his relatives. He was not wearing a flotation device.

“Research was carried out on the water and along the water for a good part of the night by patrol officers and the fire department,” said Stéphane Tremblay, spokesperson for the SQ.

Early Saturday morning, a watercraft and SQ divers came to help.

The search continued in the morning and around 1:15 p.m., the victim was located. He is a 26-year-old man from Rouyn-Noranda. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
