The organization responsible for the Montreal Olympic Stadium is launching an international competition to find a “second life” for the roof which must be dismantled this summer.
The Olympic Park is launching an international competition on the best way to reuse and recycle roof materials and components. Quebecers will then be invited to vote for their favorite idea among the eight projects selected by a jury of experts.
The jurors will notably evaluate “the ingenuity and relevance of reuse, the contribution to the ecological transition and the social impact in the community”. The winners of the competition will be offered prizes ranging between $5,000 and $15,000.
The Quebec government announced in February its project to replace the roof of the stadium, with a budget of 870 million over four years. The new roof would keep the stadium open all year round and double the annual number of visitors to this tourist site.
The stadium was designed by French architect Roger Taillibert for the 1976 Summer Olympics. The stadium then hosted the Montreal major baseball team until the Expos left for Washington in 2004. Its roof has always featured significant challenges for the managers of the Olympic Park and successive Quebec governments.
Design and architecture professionals and students from around the world are invited until June 11 to propose their “creative and innovative solutions” to reuse materials that should be dismantled this summer.
