“Rise From the Wreck”, Mentana

The Mentana group is finally in the right place. It will have taken time and detours (promising Western Soil to the clumsy Inland Desire), but the quartet hit the sweet spot. The melodies have come a long way, Philippe Brault contributes to driving the locomotive, the resulting arrangements justify the name “cinematographic folk”. Mentana has become what Robin-Joël Cool and Viviane Audet dreamed of. With Erik West-Millette and Yannick Parent now in the official portrait, the palette extends beyond the horizon line. Mentana’s music, five years later? A sort of imaginary Montana, western between Morricone and Ry Cooder, yet a palpable fantasy. The voices collide and marry at the same time. Contrasting timbres, the roughness of Robin-Joël raises the dust, the notes of Viviane do not touch the ground, angelic and disturbing. Their Black Steel Dragon of music advances, slowly, inexorably. From the ruins rise new cities that were believed to be ghosts. A whole cinema.
