Brazil: Rio region hit by catastrophic floods

(FRANCEINFO)

While southern Brazil is just emerging from an extreme heat wave, the Rio region is being hit by violent floods. A final report shows at least 20 deaths on Sunday March 24.

After a night spent under the rubble, a 4-year-old girl was found alive by rescuers on Sunday March 24 in Petropolis (Brazil). In the morning, not many houses were left standing after a landslide caused by torrential rains in the tourist town of Petropolis, located north of Rio de Janeiro.

A “critical” situation

For two days, the entire Rio region has been under water, while southern Brazil is barely emerging from a heat wave, with temperatures feeling over 60°C. Brazilian President Lula has pointed the finger at global warming, unlike his climate skeptic predecessor Jair Bolsonaro. A final report shows at least 20 deaths. The authorities described this situation as “critical”. As of November 2023, 150 people were killed in similar floods.
