Contrary to the cliché often conveyed, it is not mainly adolescents or very young adults who have recourse to abortion. In an analysis carried out last year, the New York Times concluded that the typical American who has an abortion was in her late twenties, already had a child or children, had a college education, had a low income, and was single. The analysis also found that the average procedure took place during the first six weeks of pregnancy, and that, on average, the woman who had the procedure had her first abortion.

Despite all the space it occupies in the public square and in the media, the practice of abortion is less and less common in American society. After rising after the Supreme Court recognized the right to abortion in 1973, the number of abortions performed per year per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 has been falling for more than four decades.

Ban on traveling for an abortion?
Some experts believe that states might want to prevent their citizens from going to another state to have an abortion. “I think states are not going to just say, ‘There will be no abortions in our state.’ I think they’re going to want to ban abortion for their citizens as much as possible, which would mean stopping them from travelling,” David Cohen, a professor at Drexel University’s Kline School of Law, told the Daily.
