Violent fires are underway on the island of Rhodes, Greece, and the first evacuations have taken place. What is the situation, Sunday, July 23, on the fire front? Answer with Lionel Feuerstein.
“The fires continue and it is still a bit of chaos and confusion that reigns here in Rhodes”, explains journalist Lionel Feuerstein. Only 2,000 tourists were able to be evacuated by boat or plane after the violent fires which affected the Greek island, located near Turkey. “There are 28,000 left that need to be housed and sometimes even fed.”, he adds. Many volunteers help families affected by the flames.
A situation that will last
“The problem is that this situation will continue because the fires do not weaken”, says the journalist. The wind has picked up and the temperatures are still very high, the inhabitants will have to be patient. “The authorities, who seem a little overwhelmed by the situation, still expect very tense days”, concludes Lionel Feuerstein.
