Review | “Paraiso”: Hell in Paradise

Spain, autumn 1992. Three young women have been missing since the end of the summer, and the investigation carried out by negligent police is unsuccessful. The younger brother of one of them, Javi, then takes on the role of investigator in order to reconstruct the events, and above all to try to find his sister. The discoveries of his quartet – two faithful friends, the bully of the class and himself – will however be made far beyond the average person.

The seven-episode fiction is reminiscent of the beloved series Stranger Things, where four teenagers go on a supernatural adventure in the early 1980s. A hint of resemblance to the 1985 film The Goonies also punctuates the Spanish series entitled Paraíso (Paradise in French), in reference to the name of the nightclub where most of the plot takes place.

With its atmosphere set in a precellular era, the show has very endearing characters struggling with the amplitude of the emotions experienced in adolescence. The series, however, annoys its audience because of a multitude of intrigues that are slow to be explained, in addition to adventures always bordering on tragedy. Some racist and sexist jokes, like the society of thirty years ago, also dot the fiction.

Despite these flaws, fans of Netflix’s popular and highly rated series will find pleasure in watching Paraiso, whose second season has already been filmed. You just have to abandon the monsters of the upside down world to discover the ghosts of the afterlife.
