Review of “Songs for Sinners and Saints” by Michael & The Mighty Midnight Revival

Last month, American rapper Killer Mike (from the duo Run the Jewels) gave an endearing performance at the MTelus, on the bill for the Montreal International Jazz Festival, which comes back to us when we listen to Songs for Sinners and Saints. On stage, accompanied only by a DJ and his choral ensemble The Mighty Midnight Revival, he offered the songs from his solid solo album. Michael released last year (this new album will also be considered as its addendum), but above all took the time to chat with the audience. It was a rap concert — and gospel — out of the ordinary, almost therapeutic. Mike is thus on stage as in life, committed, militant, of a disarming optimism. Transparent, always, in the text of Humble MeThen Still Talk’n That Shit at the end of the album as he reflects on his arrest last February, just after he won the first Grammy of his career. Here, the MC raps from the heart over rather old-school rhythms, offering a short but meaningful album.
