Review of A Choice of Love | The shock of feelings in the face of abortion

A choice of love is the personal and poignant story of a woman who does not want children. By taking up the pen to tackle the difficult subject of abortion, Valérie Forgues plunges deep into the intimate, a complex place where wounds, desires and convictions collide with conventions.

Author of the novel January every day and the collection of poems Radial, Valérie Forgues courageously takes the path of Annie Ernaux, Colombe Schneck and Lucie Joubert who explored the choice of non-maternity. Although addressed in different works, to which the author refers throughout the work, the subject remains eminently taboo and subject to judgment. In the form of a personal story of great poetry, Valérie Forgues immerses herself in the memory of this abortion that she experienced ten years ago, an event which remains engraved in her, like “a white stone on [sa] road “. She unabashedly explores the mapping of her feelings. She loved this potential child madly “to the point of wishing to keep him under a bell so that he would never see the light of day”. However, she never thought of keeping it. For her, motherhood would be a way of showing her identity taken away and her body ravaged.

At a time when the right to abortion is threatened south of the border, A choice of love is an essential statement, but so assertive that it could offend those who thrive in motherhood.
