In Toretsk, among the buildings in ruins after the Russian bombings, life goes on. For a month, the city of Toretsk, in Ukraine, has suffered Russian bombings day and night.

As soon as there is a lull, Galina Poroshina goes out to fetch water. Fear has become part of her daily life. “You have to get used to everything, even war; we have to survive,” laments the 63-year-old resident. This is also the case for Oleksander, who has always lived in Toretsk. Despite the alarming situation, he still has no intention of leaving. This former shoemaker has taken refuge in a small room without electricity.

If some residents do not intend to abandon their hometown, others prefer to move far from the front. The repeated Russian offensives have convinced them: they will not return. “There are more and more attacks, it’s scary. We decided to leave,” says Oleksandre Bobryk, store owner. If Ukrainian soldiers are containing the Russian attacks for the moment, the lack of resources and reinforcements is being felt.
