The City of Ottawa firefighters won the regional Firefit sports competition on Sunday, which took place this weekend in Montreal.
Firefighters from the Ottawa delegation emerged victorious in a regional relay race event that took place Sunday at Angrignon Park. They were followed, in second and third place, by teams from Ville de Longueuil and Montreal.
In the individual race on Saturday, firefighters Jeremy Peters of Markham, Ont., and Marisa Tremblay of the City of Ottawa took first place in both the men’s and women’s events.
All have thus become eligible for the Canadian Firefit Championship events to be held next September in Alberta. Participating firefighters will have to complete a series of endurance and rescue tests.
A get-together for the whole family
The regional competition took place during the first edition of the “Rendez-vous familial” organized by the Montreal Firefighters Association, on Saturday and Sunday.
This very first event for the population was “a success that risks establishing itself next year as a new, typically Montreal tradition,” the association said in a press release on Sunday.
“This Montreal Firefighters’ Family Meeting is the perfect illustration of the cohabitation of sportsmanship with the convivial and friendly side of the event,” declared the head of the organizing committee Marc-André Gosselin.
Throughout the weekend, hundreds of children were able to have fun on site thanks to inflatable games, mascots and animated activities. An exhibition of fire trucks and collectibles from the Montreal Auxiliary Firefighters Museum also allowed visitors to learn more about the history of Montreal firefighters.
