The 31-year-old was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by China’s Shuai Zhang, in a clash that lasted 65 minutes.

Marino saw her rival of the day, the 36th player in the world, break serve three times, including twice in the first set and in the first game of the second set. The Torontonian was unable to afford a single break point.

The 106th racket of the WTA concluded its confrontation with a success rate of 64% on its first service attempts. She won 65% of the exchanges disputed on her first ball. The representative of the maple leaf also had an 80% success rate when she went to the net.

It was the first time in 11 years that Marino reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. She had achieved this feat only once in her career, at Roland-Garros in 2011.

In the next round, Zhang will face the winner of the duel between Americans Coco Gauff and Madison Keys. They are the 12th and 20th seeds, respectively.
