This abandoned rabbit is no longer an exception at the Velaine-en-Haye SPA. In 2021, there were 43, unheard of for this shelter used to taking in dogs and cats. Guinea pigs, rats, birds also come to fill the boxes of this refuge in Meurthe-et-Moselle. During the single day of Tuesday, January 18, 2022, the SPA had to take charge of no less than three rats, two hamsters, ten guinea pigs and about forty birds.

An explosion of abandonments which is also confirmed on a national scale. On the occasion of its 2020 report, the SPA recorded an increase of 16% abandonment of these new pets, over the last eight months. The humane society claims that these are “compulsive purchases made during deconfinements”. Annie Sinko, the president of the SPA of Velaine-en-Haye, who shares this observation, must face lack of appropriate materials. While these species often arrive in “a deplorable state“, the SPA is struggling to find cages for birds or adequate food, testifies Annie Sinko.
