Quebecer Kim Boutin was crowned world champion in the 500 meters on Saturday at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships.
Boutin completed the distance in 42.626 seconds, ahead of Dutchwoman Xandra Velzeboer (42.833) and American Kristen Santos-Griswold (42.929). Canadian Rikki Doak (43.205) took third position in the small final.
Among the men, Jordan Pierre-Gilles (52.289) was decorated with bronze, finishing ahead of his compatriot Steven Dubois (55.412). China’s Xiaojun Lin (41.592) won.
The representatives of the maple leaf were unable to climb on the podium in the 1500 m.
Courtney Sarault was the only one to qualify for the final, which she finished in fifth place with a time of 2:22.696. South Korean Gilli Kim (2:21.192) triumphed. Canadian Renée Marie Steenge (3:01.381) placed sixth in the small final.
On the men’s side, Pascal Dion (2:32.069) was the second fastest skater in the B final. China’s Long Sun (2:23.009) won the event.
The finals of the 1000m events and relays will take place on Sunday.
