The Quebec government wants to put an end to planned obsolescence. The Minister of Justice, Simon Jolin-Barrette, tabled a bill to this effect on Thursday morning, which would modify the Consumer Protection Act.
If passed, merchants would have to make parts and repair services available at a reasonable price for a good.
The goods must also be able to be repaired with common tools and without causing irreversible damage.
It will also be prohibited to sell a product whose obsolescence is programmed. The bill also aims to reduce waste.
For cars, merchants must offer a free inspection before the end of the consumer’s lease.
Before the bill was tabled, the opposition parties were all open to the government’s initiative.
Liberal MP Marwah Rizqy had tabled a similar bill in the past.
