Quebec plans a student ombudsman more concerned with “indigenous realities”

The Minister of Education, Jean-François Roberge, tabled three amendments on Tuesday morning aimed at adapting the new National Student Ombudsman to the reality of Aboriginal people.

Faced with criticism from First Nations and opposition parties, the minister amended Bill 9, which proposed an improved version of the student ombudsman.

The Aboriginal school organizations would first be consulted for the appointment of all the members of the consultation committee responsible for setting up the regional student ombudspersons.

A second amendment specifies that the student ombudsman must at all times take into account the reality of Aboriginal people, for example by having documents translated or by offering interpreter services. Another amendment concerns Naskapi schools.

Further details will follow.
