Having just arrived in his new role, the Minister of Immigration, Francisation and Integration, Jean-François Roberge, is grappling with a real “crisis” in francization, according to the Quebec Liberal Party, which is urging him to quickly create an “action group” to resolve it.
In a letter sent Friday to his new counterpart, the Liberal immigration critic, André A. Morin, urged the minister to “urgently” form this action group, which would bring together “key players from the ministries concerned and the leaders of francization organizations.”
“Your government has an obligation to respond to the demand for francization, an obligation both towards immigrants who want to promote their integration in French, but also towards Quebec society,” he wrote.
Mr. Morin calls for francization to be made a priority, in a context where the time to register with Francisation Québec has reached “nine weeks” on average in 2023-2024.
“It seems essential to me that you exercise your leadership […] “so that French language courses are given within an acceptable time frame,” he said to Mr. Roberge, who last week replaced Minister Christine Fréchette — herself new to her post at the Economy and Energy.
