Marie-Josée Savard was first declared the winner in the early evening on Sunday, when she held a comfortable lead of several thousand votes. But it melted during the counting of the votes in favor of Mr. Marchand who finally took the lead.

Believing herself to be the new mayor of Quebec, Mme Savard had delivered a victory speech. Prime Minister François Legault had even congratulated her, before retracting.

Marie-Josée Savard was the runner-up to Régis Labeaume who decided to quit political life after 14 years in office. Mme Savard was a municipal councilor under the Labeaume administration and served on the executive committee for eight years, notably as vice-president.

In total, eight candidates coveted Quebec City Hall.
