(Quebec) Former Liberal Minister Francine Charbonneau will not be on the starting line for the 2022 elections. The member for Mille-Îles, in Laval, announced Friday that she will not seek a new mandate in the next election, in less than a year.
The Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ) confirmed the intentions of its deputy in a press release on Friday. Mme Charbonneau will leave provincial politics in 2022 after more than ten years in the National Assembly. She was first elected in 2008.
Mme Charbonneau served as Minister responsible for Seniors, Families and the Fight against Bullying under the Couillard government, from 2014 to 2018. She is the official opposition critic for forests, wildlife and of parks, since June 2020.
“Representing the citizens of Mille-Îles is an honor that I experience every day as a gift. Working to improve the well-being of people has always motivated me and this is what continues to guide me every day. I will therefore leave with my head held high, sincerely honored by the privilege that my fellow citizens have offered me by placing their trust in me, ”she said in a press release.
Liberal leader Dominique Anglade, for her part, underlined the “great political contribution” of Mr.me Charbonneau in improving the lives of Quebecers.
“For over a decade, she has worked with all her heart and dedication to the advancement of our company. Francine is an elected representative committed to the Laval community, a model of rigor for all those who want to take the leap into politics, ”she underlined.
Francine Charbonneau is the third Liberal MP to announce that she will not seek the votes in 2022 after ex-ministers Gaétan Barrette and Lise Thériault. Other veterans are likely to announce their departure from politics in the coming months. MEPs Pierre Arcand, Carlos Leitão, Kathleen Weil, Hélène David and Christine St-Pierre are still thinking about their future.
