(Quebec) Not surprisingly, Liberal veteran Carlos Leitão has added his name to the list of elected members of the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) who will not seek a new mandate in the fall.

The former Minister of Finance in the government of Philippe Couillard confirmed that he will leave politics at the end of his mandate in an interview with Radio-Canada. The member for Robert-Baldwin nevertheless plans to get involved by contributing in particular to the development of the electoral platform of his political party, which will also be unveiled during the general council of the PLQ, on June 11.
Carlos Leitão has gotten plenty of ice time at the Salon Bleu in recent weeks as he has hounded the Legault government over runaway inflation and called for measures to lessen its impact on Quebecers. He opened the ball of questions for the Liberals almost all week while the leader Dominique Anglade was on tour in Gaspésie.
The liberal tenor who is 66 years old would have been 70 years old at the end of a possible new mandate. His name is therefore added to the list of veterans of the formation who will not be starting blocks in the general elections next fall. At the beginning of May, his colleague Pierre Arcand also confirmed that he would leave politics. The departure of Mr. Leitão brings to 12 the number of elected officials who will not seek a new mandate in 2022, it is almost half of the caucus which has 27 deputies.
Carlos Leitão was elected MP for the riding of Robert-Baldwin in 2014. He served as Minister of Finance in the only mandate of the government of Philippe Couillard (2014-2018) marked by austerity policies.
