Protecting children in an emergency

In a world marked by increasing conflicts and natural disasters, the plight of displaced children has become a vital issue, requiring immediate attention. Children are our future, but they are the ones who suffer the consequences of our conflicts.

The upcoming G7 summit in Italy will provide an important opportunity for world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to advocate for children in crisis. These children, who often lack access to education, health care and basic protection, face enormous obstacles in volatile situations. It is crucial to condemn violence against civilians, ensure humanitarian access and respond to the specific needs of children living in difficult conditions around the world.

The Sustainable Development Goals prioritize leaving no one behind, especially vulnerable children. Canada’s new contribution of $350 million to humanitarian aid is a step in the right direction. However, broader measures are needed to address the complex connection between wars, climate disasters and health problems affecting children.

As Canada prepares for the G7 summit, the message is clear: emphasize the rights of children, condemn violence and ensure a strong humanitarian response. Now is the time to act to protect the health and future of every child, everywhere.
