The Foodwatch consumer association reported on Wednesday, April 25, a list of products sold in supermarkets whose price would be higher in family packs than individually. Distributors cite errors.
Products sold in XXL format and at low prices would in fact be much more expensive per kilo or per litre. Example with cookies where the price increases by more than 20% between the family format and the classic format. The same goes for juices, whose price per liter in large format increases by 60 cents compared to the smaller format. Some consumers say they are surprised and denounce a dishonest practice, while others admit to having seen the deception a long time ago.
Products up to 28% more expensive
In its survey, the Foodwatch consumer association pinpoints 12 brand or distributor products that can cost up to 28% more than conventional formats. All supermarket brands would be targeted. “In our investigation, we did not make an exhaustive list of products. The idea (…) is to say that a single scam at the price on the shelves, a penny more increase between the classic formats and special formats, it’s already a penny too much”, says Audrey Morice, Foodwatch campaign manager. Large-scale retailers cite errors that have been corrected.
