Primož Roglič wins the Critérium du Dauphiné, his teammate Jonas Vingegaard wins the 8th stage

Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) won the Critérium du Dauphiné 2022, yellow jersey, leader of the general classification in points, after eight stages and 1193.6 kilometers accumulated in one week. It was his teammate, the Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) who won Sunday on the 8th and last stage at the Solaison plateau (Haute-Savoie). They both finished hand in hand as they crossed the finish line.

15 riders in the breakaway

After the Enric Mas (Movistar) package, there were 138 runners left at the start of the Savoyard town of Saint-Alban-Leysse. As he has become accustomed to throughout the week, Pierre Rolland is one of the most enterprising riders from the climb to the Plainpalais pass, although his polka dot jersey is safe from any threat. He passes at the top at the head of a bulky group comprising about fifteen runners, but whose composition evolves in the descent according to the counter-attack movements on the descent. It was at KM 23 that the breakaway took its final form with 15 riders: Eddie Dunbar, Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers), Matteo Fabbro (Bora-Hansgrohe), Gorka Izagirre (Movistar), Bruno Armirail, Michael Storer ( Groupama-FDJ), George Bennett (UAE), Antonio Tiberi, Kenny Elissonde, Antwan Tolhoek (Trek-Segafredo), Simon Geschke (Cofidis), Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies), Jan Hirt (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert), Franck Bonnamour and Pierre Rolland (B&B-KTM).

Two leaders at Jumbo-Visma before the Tour de France

While the Tour de France begins in two and a half weeks, with a big start on July 1 and three stages in Denmark, the Jumbo-Visma team, which shone in the Critérium du Dauphiné this year, now has two leaders: the Slovenian Primož Roglič and Dane Jonas Vingegaard who will be at home. Will there be a good understanding like this Sunday? The Vingegaard-Roglič duo set off alone four kilometers before the finish line. Only Ben O’Connor was able to follow them, without catching them, but the two teammates crossed the finish line hand in hand, the bouquet of the day going to the young Dane.

“Finishing 1 and 2 on the Tour would be extraordinary”

Upon his arrival, after crossing the line for the 8th and final stage in Haute-Savoie, the Dane Jonas Vingegaard did not hide his ambitions for the next Tour de France. “It was quite unbelievable. It was the plan we had, I had to attack and Primož had to follow me, we wanted to see if we were able to let everyone go. We succeeded and we can be proud of what we we did. During the classics it didn’t go so well for me, but I’m very happy to be back at a very high level. It’s one of the biggest races in the world, so to win a stage and finish 2nd overall, it’s obviously huge. To finish 1st and 2nd on the Tour, it would be extraordinary but the competition will not be the same, it will be even harder. I hope that one of us can win.”
