After six weeks of voting and the participation of 642 million voters, the counting of ballots for the legislative elections continues in India. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and his allies are moving towards a new mandate on Tuesday June 4, but with a reduced majority.

According to figures from the electoral commission after the counting of half of the ballots, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Narendra Modi and the members of his coalition would obtain at least 290 seats, more than the 272 necessary to obtain a parliamentary majority in the lower house of 543 seats. This total is currently lower than the 353 seats won by the BJP and its allies in 2019. The BJP is in the lead with 38.68% of the votes, according to these partial results.

Electronic counting began Tuesday morning in the electoral centers of each state. The country uses electronic machines allowing rapid counting of ballots. In previous general elections, the main trends are usually clear by mid-afternoon, with losers conceding defeat, although full and final results may not arrive until Tuesday night.
