British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday (August 5) promised a tough response to put a stop to the far-right violence that spread across the United Kingdom over the weekend.
Following a crisis meeting in Downing Street, the head of the Labour government announced that he was mobilising a “army” of specialized police reserve. He stressed that his priority “absolute” was to put an end to the disorders and that “criminal sanctions are swift.”
A week after the knife attack that killed three girls in the northwest of England, amid speculation about the suspect’s origins, the country is facing its worst riots in 13 years. The country has not seen such an outbreak of violence since 2011, after a young mixed-race man, Mark Duggan, was killed by police in north London.
According to the fBritish police chiefs’ assembly378 people have been arrested in the last week, a number that continues to increase with the progress of investigations, in the wake of the violence of recent days: hotels housing asylum seekers ransacked, mosques attacked, businesses looted…Several were imprisoned on Monday morning during appearances before judges. “These criminals will pay the price”assured the Minister of the Interior, Yvette Cooper, on the BBC.
