Computer scientists, developers, computer engineers, data specialists, cybersecurity specialists: in France, there is clearly a lack of candidates for all these professions which are nevertheless in full development. It has even become a national concern. The France 2030 plan on technological innovation plans to devote 2.5 billion euros to training the talents of tomorrow in these professions. In terms of employment, the stakes are colossal: the industry could promote the creation of 1.75 million new jobs in Europe over the next eight years.

A study conducted by École 42, which is completely free computer training, open to all, without qualification, from the age of 18, tries to answer this question. It reveals that these recent professions suffer from prejudices which exclude a large number of potential candidates. First prejudice: these are expensive training courses. 70% of those questioned are of this opinion. However, in addition to École 42, there are all the training courses labeled “great digital school” which are completely free. They are present throughout France and are aimed more particularly at a public far from employment. This undermines the second received idea highlighted by this study: 66% of French people think that a high level of education is needed to integrate these courses, or even that they are only accessible to students from engineering schools. Nothing could be less false.

School 42 insists on one point: most of the learning requires little mathematical skills, but above all requires logic and common sense. Moreover, these courses can be integrated at any age. Ecole 42 has partnered with Pôle Emploi Ile-de-France for seven years to train seniors and long-term job seekers. The figures speak for themselves: the rates of return to employment are between 70 and 75%.

Last prejudice against these trades, it concerns women. Women who are only 17% in the digital professions. A third of women think that they do not have the same chances of succeeding in this sector, even if this image tends to improve.
