Port-Cartier Prison | The SQ opens an investigation after the assault of an employee

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has opened an investigation into the attack on an employee of the federal prison in Port-Cartier, on the North Shore. A search will be carried out throughout the establishment and visits have been temporarily suspended.

This is what we learned in a press release from Correctional Service Canada (CSC) published at the end of the day, Wednesday.

The initial events occurred last Monday. The agency reports that an employee was the victim of “assault” by an assailant whose identity has not been revealed. It is therefore unknown whether it is an inmate, another employee or a visitor to the prison.

The injured employee was evaluated and transported to a nearby hospital. No further details were given on his state of health, but there is no fear for his life.

SCC clarified Wednesday that “appropriate measures” were taken after the event, without providing further information. However, we know that the Sûreté du Québec has opened an investigation into this matter.

The Port-Cartier prison is currently in a “modified cell routine”, in other words the movement of inmates has been restricted to reduce risks. A search will also take place as a security measure.

All visits will be suspended for the duration of this search and “normal operations will resume when it is deemed safe to do so,” Correctional Service Canada said.
