During his visit to Marseille organized on September 23, Pope Francis will celebrate a great mass open to the public in the mythical Stade Vélodrome, in the heart of the second city of France, announced the diocese of the Marseille city in a press release released on Friday 2 June, confirming information from the regional daily Provence.

“Mass will be held on September 23 at 4:45 p.m. at the Vélodrome”which can accommodate more than 67,000 people, the diocese said. “When the Pope celebrates Mass at the Vélodrome stadium, a place that brings together Marseille in all its diversity, it will be as if he were going to the home of every Marseillais”greeted Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, Archbishop of Marseilles. The principle of this public mass had been formalized at the end of March by the diocese of Marseille, only its exact location remained to be determined.

The mayor of the city, Benoît Payan, assured him that it was “an honor” to welcome the sovereign pontiff to Marseilles.
