Police interventions | A demonstration in Montreal on Saturday to denounce racial profiling

Three years to the day after the death of American George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, human rights groups deplore the fact that racial profiling is still going on in Quebec. They are organizing a demonstration on Saturday in Montreal, in particular to denounce Bill 14 aimed at modernizing police practice, which has everything of an “empty shell”, according to them.

“We prohibit something that is already prohibited, and the scourge of racial profiling continues,” denounces the spokesperson for the League for Rights and Freedoms (LDL), Lynda Khelil. Bill 14 carried by the Minister of Public Security, François Bonnardel, prohibits any discrimination in police activities.

Yet, although already prohibited under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, discrimination still governs many stops and roadside stops, said Ms.me Khelil.

“The statistical data is very clear,” says Maxim Fortin, coordinator of the Quebec section of the LDL. People of color are more challenged than white people. »

A demonstration against racial profiling and in tribute to George Floyd will take place in Montreal on Saturday, May 27.

More details to come.
