In the production notes, Nine Antico, who signs his first feature film after having made his mark in the world of comics (Girls Don’t Cryin particular), claims to have been marked by Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach) You sleep Nicole (Stéphane Lafleur) and some films by Woody Allen.
Its influences are perfectly assumed in playlist. In this feminist column shot in black and white by reinventing the spirit of the New Wave, the director offers an eminently sympathetic comedy. Free in tone, the story floats at times, but the whole certainly reveals a promising style.
Nine Antico can also count on the presence of Sara Forestier. The actress, revealed by Kechiche in dodging and then consecrated by several great roles (including the one she held in Name of people, a film by Michel Leclerc that won her the César for best actress), is remarkable in the skin of Sophie. This young woman is undecided, doesn’t really know what she wants from life, even less from her love life, but she rushes into the heap. Both luminous and tormented, Sophie is one of those anti-heroines who translate well a trait of the times, even if the filmmaker intentionally offers her a timeless setting. playlist is also the story of a beautiful friendship, nourished by female solidarity. In this chapter, Laetitia Dosch and Sara Forestier form a beautiful duo.
With such a title of film, one will obviously notice the care given to the musical score, dominated moreover by True Love Will Find You in the End, a song by Daniel Johnston. Each of the emerging or classic pieces making up this frame, including eyes to cry, a (magnificent) song by Gainsbourg, interpreted by Nana Mouskouri, marks a stage in the existential questioning of a woman whose portrait Nine Antico beautifully draws. What a nice surprise.
