The article “The presence of scooters in pedestrian streets” (Jeanne Corriveau, July 18, 2022) is very timely. We can applaud the availability of new modes of transport, in particular the electric bicycle, which seems to be rapidly gaining in popularity, both for the mobility it allows and as a valid tool in the fight against climate change. But, as is obvious to all, a minority of users of these new modes of transport are careless, disrespectful, or totally lacking in civility.
And the problems are far from being limited to pedestrian streets. They are also found in parks and even on sometimes busy sidewalks. Furthermore, I was struck by the observation that 30% of cyclists passed too close to pedestrians on a pedestrian street and surprised by the comment that there were few “very problematic” situations. Does it take a serious accident before acting? Will the police apply this “very problematic” criterion to motorists?
Isn’t it time to give a serious push to put an end to the exaggerations? Why not require a license plate for any electric-powered vehicle? […]
