Pau and its castle

Standing in the heart of the city, facing the Pyrenees, on a rocky outcrop Overhanging the Gave, the castle of Pau is the emblematic monument of the city.

He is particularly known for having within his walls the giant shell that served as a cradle to the future King Henry IV. The latter is placed on a table covered with deep blue velvet strewn with fleur-de-lis and bearing an H surrounded by a wreath of laurels, all embroidered with gold threads.

The Château de Pau is visible from afar thanks to its location but also to the 33m high tower built under the will of Gaston Fébus. All in brick, this monument is in fact a system of 3 successive enclosures, glacis and portcullis doors designed to strengthen the defensive system.
