An unsurprising result. The outgoing Algerian president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, was re-elected for a second term with nearly 95% of the vote, announced the president of the electoral authority, Anie, on Sunday, September 8. Out of a total of 5.630 million “Votes recorded, 5.320 million voted for the independent candidate” Abdelmadjid Tebboune, “94.65% of the votes”said Mohamed Charfi.

The president of Anie did not, however, provide new figures on the participation rate, after having announced during the night “an average rate of 48% at the close of business” Saturday, at 8 p.m. The campaign team of moderate Islamist candidate Abdelaali Hassani described “weird term” THE “average participation rate” announced by the Anie, averaging the surveys from different regions. The participation rate usually corresponds to the number of voters divided by the number of registered voters (24.5 million in total).

Aged 78, Abdelmadjid Tebboune was supported by four leading parties that sealed an alliance, including the former single party FLN (National Liberation Front) and the Islamist movement El Bina. In addition to his supporters, Abdelmadjid Tebboune based his power on severe repression. According to human rights organizations, dozens of opponents are still behind bars.

Facing him, two candidates remained in his shadow. The first, Abdelaali Hassani, a 57-year-old public works engineer, president of the main Islamist party MSP (Movement of Society for Peace). The second, Youcef Aouchiche, a 41-year-old former journalist and senator, head of the FFS (Socialist Forces Front), a historic opposition party that had boycotted elections since 1999.
