“Our paramedics”: spending your life saving others

Richard Lafond fell in love with the paramedic profession 37 years ago. The adrenaline of urgency, the unpredictability of situations, the feeling of having helped a fellow citizen: so many aspects of the job he loves. While others would crumble under this pressure, he lives for it.

This man is one of the various participants that the camera follows in the new documentary series by Moi et Cie, Our paramedics. He equips his vehicle, walks the streets of Montreal, finds (and sometimes has to look for) the injured following calls made to Urgences-santé. In short, his days follow each other, but are never alike, with cases ranging from severe shortness of breath to someone being stabbed. This is what we call primary care, in the jargon. Some of the paramedics, like Jean-Pascal Paré, have chosen to continue their training in order to be able to perform advanced care, such as surgery following mutilation.

No matter the situation, few are those who would find there a source of daily happiness. And yet, there are Richard and Jean-Pascal. Very human, the series shines with its reality on the ground. Apart from a few blurs on the victims’ faces to preserve their anonymity, the viewer has the impression of being on the scene with them and with all the uncertainty that entails.

Authentic, but above all inspiring, the series Our paramedics lifts the veil on the essential work of these people whose sole purpose is to help others and save lives.
