The Liberal government has amended its draft firearms regulations to ensure that a Canadian who buys a gun has a license that is indeed valid.
When Bill C-71 was passed and received royal assent in 2019, the government said it would require sellers to check the validity of a firearms license before selling an unrestricted weapon, such as a rifle or shotgun.
By contrast, the proposed regulations did not include any requirement for a seller to verify the validity of the license with the federal Registrar of Firearms — an omission that has drawn criticism from pro-gun proponents. fire.
The final regulations made public on Wednesday closed that loophole.
The law also requires dealers to keep records of non-restricted firearms transactions.
Additionally, the law extends background checks that would determine eligibility for a firearms license to a person’s entire lifetime, not just the past five years.
