Minister Sajjan clarified during an interview with The Canadian Press that he studied models in use in other countries, notably the United States, Germany and Australia. According to the minister, there will be pilot projects in 2024 and additional research so that the agency is able to respond to worst-case scenarios.
Among Minister Sajjan’s concerns is the possibility that a major earthquake and hurricane could occur at the same time, in the middle of a season of severe wildfires.
In 2023, Canada experienced its worst fire season on record. Nearly 10 times the average land area was burned and almost every region of the country was affected.
